The Democratic School Teachers Association (DSTA) was founded in 1984 with the primary aim of advocating for the rights and welfare of teachers in aided schools across the region. Achieving formal recognition in 1986, DSTA has since been a steadfast voice for educators in the educational landscape.

The formation of DSTA in 1984 was mainly due to the special interest and initiation taken by the present General Secretary of Nair Service Society Sri. G Sukumaran Nair. The Idea was originally conceived in his mind. The Organization got its Recognition in 1986 because of the effort taken by Sri. G Sukumaran Nair. The organization got ample support from NSS Leaders like Sri. P K Narayana Panicker, Sri. N Bhaskaran Nair and Sri. Harikumar Koyikkal, Present Changanasery Taluk NSS Union President, who were prominent leaders from the Nair Service Society (NSS) and National Democratic Party (NDP) , along with Sri. N. Ramachandran Pillai, Sri. Ramakrishna Pillai, Sri. T.G Gopinatha Kurup, and Sri. S. Ramachandra Panicker, who were distinguished teachers .

Over the years, DSTA has been steered by a succession of dedicated presidents including N. Ramachandran Pillai, Ramakrishna Pillai, T.G Gopinatha Kurup, R. Mohan, M.K Kaladharam, C. R Narayana Kurup, P.M Udayakumar, R. Surendra Nath, K. J Mohan, C. Raveendra Nath, B. Krishnakumar, and S. Vinodkumar. Similarly, its general secretaries have included notable figures like T.G Gopinathakurup, S. Ramachandra Panicker, N.S Vijayan, M.S Aravindakshan Nair, P.K Narayanan Nair, S. Vinodkumar,   K. Prasannakumar, R. Harisanker, and B. Bhadran Pillai.

During the Period of formation of HSS section DSTA benefited from the guidance of leaders from the Higher Secondary School (H.S.S) including P. N Somadasan Nair, G. Rajesh, B. Krishnakumar, and L. Krishnakumar.

The treasurer of DSTA has been managed by competent individuals such as R. Harisanker, S. Vinodkumar, T. K Jayalekshmi, and B. Krishnakumar.

The initial leadership of DSTA saw N. Ramachandran Pillai as the president and T.G Gopinatha Kurup as the general secretary in 1984, followed by T.G Gopinatha Kurup assuming the presidency in 1986, with S. Ramachandra Panicker serving as the general secretary.

DSTA follows a hierarchical structure comprising units, sub-districts, districts, and state-level bodies. Its decision-making process involves a general body, general council, and executive officials, ensuring democratic representation and effective governance.

Throughout its existence, DSTA has been committed to promoting the welfare and professional development of teachers and schools, advocating for their rights, and fostering a conducive environment for education.
